The Real Bio

The paragraph above is an amalgamation of the kind of thing that’s written about me when I travel the world sharing my knowledge and expertise. However, the truth is that I have been a failure many times over in my life, including in my career.

Having failed many many times at university before finally graduating with a degree in dentistry and being nothing special in school, I was never tipped to achieve anything of any significance. At university I was treated poorly by many staff, I didn’t understand a lot of what I was being taught due to exceptionally poor quality teaching and I lost all motivation when faced with useless topics.

I started my career with a hatred for healthcare and a will to leave as a result. Thanks to certain individuals I came across, I luckily found interesting topics and began to be my own educator (without university-style death by powerpoint).

Being in charge of my own education made me enjoy this field more than I could ever have imagined. The enjoyment turned to obsession and I’m grateful for it leading to labels such as “global expert” from respectable institutions.

Today, I’m humbled by the messages from clinicians and patients around the world that have been helped by my videos, lectures and appearances.

I know I am a contraversial figure at times. This is not my intention - my intention is to use my courage to stand up and speak the truth when others are afraid to in an industry fuelled by social media hype, back-pocket funding and prioritising of profit over science. My intentions are for the benefit of the scientific community as a whole as well as patients worldwide. If this leads to companies placing a target on my back as has happened numerous times already, so be it. I care more about raising the bars of education quality and patient outcomes rather than pleasing big corporates and their bank accounts.

For example, while walking into the 2024 ACE conference in London, I was told from a member of a polynucleotide company that I have a target on my back. When I enquired why, he said because of my recent YouTube video on the topic explaining that they’re a waste of time and just marketing hype. After entering the conference, while nearing a particular stand (Dermafocus; a polynuc. manufacturer), one of their reps who used to work at Teoxane approached me with the words, “You’re up sh*t creek without a paddle.” When I asked why, she said because of the video. I replied that I had not said anything factually incorrect and my reasoning that polynucleotides only make limited collagen types was entirely important to inform doctors about. She then proceeded to call over one of her team with a scientific background (as she doesn’t have one herself) to try and prove me wrong. This other team member simply confirmed what I’d said and the said rep had nothing more to say to me (embarassingly) and changed the topic.

I hope there are many more years of this in store and it leads to the medical field increasing it’s quality of education, clinicians, sales reps, products, marketing, results and regulation. In the meantime, don’t get fooled by the marketing deployed by deep-pocketed brands.

Yours honestly,
Abs
